Nowadays, everybody reads a lot of blogs and regularly updated portals. It is quite important that you have all those websites organized properly, and you don’t miss out on any updates pertaining to the same. Google Reader, is a satisfactory solution to this problem. However, you still have to keep looking for updates, which is quite nagging.GRaiN, a notifier application for Google Reader that sits in your system tray and alerts you when you have new unread items is a suitable private opensource project you might have never heard of.
GRaiN isn’t an application; it’s really just a tray icon, which is cool. Install it, set it up once and you will be notified about the updates regularly. The settings of GRaiN can be easily altered according to your needs. I’ll quickly go through the entire process of installing and setting it up on your windows PC.
1. Download GRaiN using this link.
2. Unzip the file and start the installation process.
3. Select whether you want just your account’s Google Reader to be tracked or anybody who uses the computer.
4. You can set the time for checking your Google Reader; for example if you choose 20, GRaiN will check for new items in your Google Reader after every 20 minutes and notify you about the same.
5. You can also select the folders of feeds which you would like to get updates for, just below the option for setting the update checking frequency. The default is all the folders. You can skip this step.
6. You can also have a sound file to play for notifying you about new unread updates. Ain’t it cool?
7. The animated pop-up notification gives you notification for new updates as they come.
8. Finally, you can choose to open up a new tab in your browser for Google Reader from the pop-up notification. There is also an option to choose the web browser in the installation process.
If you are a windows user, which is highly probable then you must have this desktop application for tracking your favourite blogs fromGoogle Reader.
